Just as the tiny bacteria, so people adapt to their environment and learn to live even in extreme conditions – from the Sahara heat to the frozen tundra of Siberia. Even in inhospitable areas, such as high mountains, where oxygen is low, people have been living there for millennia. Approximately 140 million people live permanently at high altitudes over 2,500 meters in the Himalayas in Asia, the Andes in South America and in the highlands of Ethiopia. Then you’ll see the seven cities located at high altitude, well above the 3,000 meters.
1. La Rinconada – Peruvian Andes, Peru
The city La Rinconada in Peru is located in the Peruvian Andes, where over 50,000 people live in this mountain town at an altitude of 5,100 meters.
2. El Alto – Bolivia
The city of El Alto is one of the largest and fastest-growing urban centers of Bolivia. With a population of 1.1 million, at an altitude of 4,150 meters, it is also one of the most high altitude cities in the world.
3. Potosi – Bolivia
The Potosi is located at an altitude of 4,090 meters, known for mining of precious stones and gold, grew rapidly and arithemi now over 240,000 people.
4. Shigatse – Tibet, China
Shigatse is the second largest city in Tibet Autonomous Region (TAR), the People’s Republic of China. With a population of 100,000, is one of the largest cities in Tibet, at an altitude of 3.840 meters.
5. Juliaca – Peru
The Juliaca is the capital of San Roman in the Puno region of southeastern Peru. It is the largest city in the region, with a population of 225 146 inhabitants and is located at 3,825 meters above sea level, the plateau Collao.
6. Oruro – Bolivia
Founded on November 1, 1606 as a center of mining silver and tin, one of the largest cities in Bolivia, with a population of 235 393, which is 3.706 meters above sea level.
7. Lhasa – Tibet, China
The Lhasa has an elevation of about 3,600 meters and is located in the center of the plateau of Tibet, known for its great natural beauty. The Lhasa is the second most populous city on the Tibetan plateau, with a population of over 550,000.
